`Star Trek' Captain
Takes Over as Mayor

by Julie Kurrus

The search is finally over ... the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce has chosen actress Kate Mulgrew, star of the television series "Star Trek Voyager," as the new celebrity "Honorary Mayor" for the Brentwood community. She will replace Honorary Mayor David Horowitz, TV commentator.  Mulgrew currently stars as Starfleet Capt. Kathryn Janeway of the Starship U.S.S. Voyager in "Star Trek Voyager," produced by Paramount Network Television.

"I am honored," Mulgrew said about her upcoming "Honorary Mayor" role. "I intend to enhance the Brentwood community. We will bring back romance and style ... and, I'm only imposing one law: All boys over the age of eight years will have to pull up their pants [referring to the current big, low-riding pants fashion]."

Mulgrew is a veteran of television, film and theater and is known for her many starring roles, such as Kate Columbo (her own series), wife of television's detective Lt. Columbo, her recurring role as Sam Malone's love interest on several television episodes of "Cheers," her portrayal of an alcoholic anchorwoman on an episode of "Murphy Brown," which won her the Tracey Humanitarian Award, and films such as `Throw Mama from the Train" with Danny DeVito and Billy Crystal.

Horowitz will step down and Mulgrew will be officially "inaugurated" during the Second Annual Presidents Ball, a black-tie optional affair honoring a number of award winners, one of which is the Getty Center's Harold Williams as "Citizen of the Year."

The Presidents Ball will be held Saturday, Feb. 21, at the Summit Bel-Air Hotel in Brentwood. Seating is limited. For more information or tickets, please call (xxx) xxx-xxxx. Net proceeds will help fund Brentwood's Memorial Day Parade.
