“We're all in this together,” Mulgrew says. “Everybody feels good about coming to work and sad to have to leave it, and everybody is hungry for more. This kind of things doesn't happen often enough.”

Mulgrew, whose TV credits stretch back to the ABC soap Ryan's Hope in the 1970's, has become a kind of den mother and cheerleader for the newer talent. In particular, she's close to Schilling, having played her mother on the NBC medical drama Mercy.

We spend a lot of time on the outside together,” says Mulgrew, known to many for her long run on Star Trek: Voyager as Captain Kathryn Janeway. “We're good friends, and I think she was ideally cast. The dimensions of her talent are thrilling to watch. "

“I also have the other girls to my house whenever I can,” she continues. “Natasha Lyonne really pops on screen – she is deeply mad and deeply authentic. I love Yael Stone [who plays Lorna Morello] and Samira Willey [Poussey Washington] who is remarkably talented. And Uzo Aduba is unbelievably complex and surprising, and also beautifully disciplined on set. It's not one take that she does exquisitely – it's ten.”
