TEA Time by Christopher Wallenberg
Playing a Hollywood Legend like Katharine
Hepburn would be a tough proposition for most actresses. But for Kate Mulgrew,
who is best known for her seven-year run as Captain Janeway on TV's "Star
Trek: Voyager," this task is made even more difficult in Matthew Lombardo's
one-woman play Tea at Five. That's because Mulgrew must portray
the indomitable Hepburn both in her early diva life and also in her twilight
years. Fortunately, Mulgrew is up to the task - depicting the strident,
31-year old star, still defiant even though she's been dubbed "box office
poison," and later the 76-year old, aging actress suffering from Parkinson's
and reflecting on a life filled with loss. Mulgrew captures the emotional
highs and lows of the inimitable, gravelly-voiced icon and won raves for
her performance during the play's previous engagements off-Broadway and
at the American Repertory Theatre's Loeb Drama Center. |

A Star Trek veteran becomes the living image
of Katharine Hepburn.
Once practically written off as box office
poison, Katharine Hepburn became one of Hollywood's immortals. Tea at Five,
a one-woman show starring Kate Mulgrew, plumbs the character of the four-time
Oscar winner, digging past her celluloid persona and into her intimate
feelings on cinema, life, and Spencer Tracy. Best known for her seven-year
turn as Captain Kathryn Janeway on Star Trek: Voyager, Mulgrew comes to
embody the legend by fine stagecraft and by raising and lowering her voice
along the famous Hepburn register. -- Maressa Brown |
